Our representative will welcome you at Jomo Kenyatta Nairobi International Airport and introduce you to your guide and driver, who will take you straight to your hotel for the night. On the way, you will get the first impressions of the vibrant Kenyan capital. Your guide will be pleased to answer all questions about Kenyan culture, nature, and daily life that might come to your mind, now and in the following days you will be spending together.
You will be picked up from the hotel in the early morning for your road trip to the slopes of Mt. Kenya.
On the way through the central region of Kenya, we are driving through a landscape mostly characterized by small-scale farming. There is much to discover on the way.
Weather permitting, you will be able to see the snowy peak of Mt. Kenya on your way to Ol Pejeta Conservancy. With a population of 140 individuals, it is the largest sanctuary for black rhinos in East and Central Africa. We will arrive on time for Lunch.
In the afternoon, you will go on your first game drive to sample what Ol Pejeta Conservancy can offer. With a bit of luck, you will already be able to see the Big Five – Lions, Elephants, Buffalos, Rhinos, and Leopards at Ol Pejeta Conservancy.
This private conservancy with its 360 km2 is located directly on the Equator. You will also have the opportunity to visit a sanctuary for rescued chimps from all over the world. Besides, Ol Pejeta is home to the last two remaining northern white rhinos in the world.
Today we start the day with an early game drive at Ol Pejeta, as the chances for spectacular game viewing are best in the early morning hours. The afternoon is for leisure, for example, to swim and relax at the hotel pool, watch wildlife gathering at the hotel’s waterhole, or for one of the extras offered by the sanctuary, like game horse riding.
We will check out from our hotel in Mt. Kenya in the morning and drive towards the Rift Valley. Stop over at Thomson’s Falls or Nyahururu Falls, a stunning waterfall located close to the equator near Nyahururu.
We arrive at Lake Naivasha around lunchtime. In the afternoon, a guide will take you on a breathtaking boat safari. You are sure to encounter groups of hippos. In the late evening or early morning hours, when the hippos come to the shore, you can also take a guided walk to the lake shore.
South of Lake Naivasha, the hell breaks loose underground, and on the surface, gorge labyrinths and climbing rocks beckon. Hell’s Gate National Park was established in 1984 and is named for a narrow cut in the cliffs that was once a tributary of a prehistoric lake.
The small National Park is known for its wide variety of wildlife and its spectacular backdrops. The park’s main attraction is the Nyorowa Gorge.
The lower gorge can only be explored on foot. Weather permitting, a Masai guide from the local Olerkarian community will lead us on an easy hike of several hours through the spectacular gorge to the hot springs called “Hell’s Kitchen”.
In the afternoon we will relax at the Ol Karia geothermal hot Spa in 35°C warm water.
Early in the morning, we start driving towards Masai Mara through the Rift Valley. Nowhere is the probability of getting the whole abundance of East African fauna in front of the camera greater than in the 1510 km2 large Masai Mara.
The main attraction is the annual crossing of the Mara River by millions of wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of Thomson’s gazelle, zebra, and topis in what is probably the largest wildlife migration in the world (June/July and September/October). We will arrive at our lodge on time for lunch. The afternoon is at leisure.
Today we have a full day to observe all the many wild animals the Mara has to offer! We start the day early and have our breakfast with spectacular views:
The National Reserve is home to more than 95 species of mammals and over 400 species of birds. You will observe herds of elephants, gazelles, zebras, topis, and many many more who graze on the vast plains…, cheetahs and leopards rest in the shade of the acacia bushes, and if we are lucky we will see lions hunting.
In the afternoon we also have the opportunity to visit a village of the Masai people, witnessing their traditional singing and dancing. A glimpse into their homes and social structure is a poignant experience.
Before we make our way back to Nairobi today, there is the possibility to use the morning for an early game drive or to book a spectacular tour with the hot air balloon over the Mara. We will arrive in Nairobi in the late afternoon, in time for dinner.
At the foot of the breathtaking backdrop of snow-capped Kilimanjaro, amid a vast savannah landscape, lies Amboseli National Park which we will explore for the next two days. Amboseli means “salty dust” in the language of the Maasai. The (usually dried-up bed of) Lake Amboseli, which gives the park its name, has filled with water due to the rising water level in the last years, attracting numerous flamingos.
Nature lovers can explore five different habitats here ranging from wetlands with sulphur springs to woodlands. The park is not only home to 400 different species of birds, you can see leopards, cheetahs, wild dogs, buffalos, giraffes, zebras, lions, crocodiles, mongoose, hyrax, dik-dik, lesser kudu, and nocturnal porcupine but also one of the largest elephant populations in East Africa. The elephants here are used to vehicles and you get very close to them.
Today we will take the train to Mombasa, the oldest Kenyan city, where we will arrive early in the afternoon.
We will take a tour of the Old City of Mombasa with its historical buildings showing African, Arabic, and European influences. Mombasa was the main center for trade between Africa and the Arabic World and India.
You will visit the UNESCO World Heritage Fort Jesus, which was built by the Portuguese between 1593 and 1596. Later in the day, we take a ferry south to Diani Beach where we will arrive on time for dinner.
Diani beach boasts a magnificent 25km stretch of pure white sand to simply enjoy and relax but it is also one of the finest destinations for water sports of all kinds. Your hotel offers water sport facilities for all ages and fitness levels alike. You can explore Kenya’s Swahili Coast above water or below: scuba diving, deep sea fishing, windsurfing, kite-surfing, snorkeling safaris, and jet-skiing are some great ways to unwind in the sun. For those looking for more laid-back activities, how about a gentle boat trip through the mangrove forest, watching fish dart under a glass bottom boat, or going on a camel ride along the beach?
Today it is goodbye Kenya. Your driver will bring you to the airport in Mombasa and we say “Asante Sana – thank you” and wish you a safe journey home with unforgettable memories to carry with you!
