Our representative will welcome you at Jomo Kenyatta Nairobi International Airport and introduce you to your guide and driver, who will take you straight to your hotel for the night. On the way, you will get the first impressions of the vibrant Kenyan capital. Your guide will be pleased to answer all questions about Kenyan culture, nature, and daily life that might come to your mind, now and in the following days you will be spending together.
After breakfast, we start our road trip to Sarara Camp in Samburu National Reserve, Namunyak Community Conservancy.
On the way through the central region of Kenya, we are driving through a landscape mostly characterized by small-scale farming. There is much to discover on the way.
Be prepared with enough fresh water bottles as on our journey North we are entering the arid and hot part of Kenya. Once we are past Isiolo the heat will begin to take its toll on us.
Vibrant urban centers begin to give way to sparsely populated villages. Past Archers Post we will find ourselves mostly alone on one of the best roads in Kenya.
We drive towards Samburu, home to the ethnic group of the Samburu who might appear anytime in the arid landscape with their goats, cattle, and camels.
Sarara camp is set on the slopes of the Mathew Mountains. It offers not only awe-inspiring views but also a swimming pool to relax in.
Through community conservation efforts over the years, Namunyak Community Conservancy has become a haven for wildlife – with elephants, giraffes, leopards, and many other species returning in increasing numbers. The conservancy is home to the second-largest population of elephants in Kenya, more than 450 reticulated giraffes, the critically endangered Grévy zebra, and a host of other species – including the fabled Gerenuk.
In the afternoon we can either decide on a game drive or a thrilling safari on horseback. We will end the day with sundowners under the wide open skies of Samburu County.
We have the whole day to explore Namunyak Community Conservancy. We might start the day with a guided walking safari with packed breakfasts in breathtaking settings or spend the morning beading with Samburu ladies and hear more about the cultural importance of their vivid jewelery before we honor an ancient Samburu tradition by visiting one of the famous Singing Wells or going on a game drive again.
We will start early in the morning for our road trip to Ngurunit, beautifully located at the foot of the Ndotto mountain range in the Samburu region. We arrive in Ngurunit during lunchtime at Ndotto camp. In the afternoon we walk to the stunning natural rock pools and water slides of river Ndelewai to refresh and swim.
In the morning, before it gets too hot, we will have a 4-hour hike in the beautiful Ndotto Mountains.
The afternoon is for leisure. You have the opportunity to visit a Samburu village, swim again in the natural rock pools near our camp, or spend time with the children of the Ngurunit elementary school.
We will depart in the morning to Mt. Ololokwe, one of the most famous landmarks of Samburu County. The 2000m high table mountain is a popular destination for hiking and camping enthusiasts. We arrive in time for lunch.
Mt. Ololokwe is an important pillar of the Samburu cultural heritage and is also called the “holy mountain”. In the afternoon Samburu guides will lead us over 1000 meters of altitude on elephant trails to the top of the mountain (3-4h – easy hike) where dinner is already prepared for us. There we will camp for the night.
This morning, we will experience a breathtaking sunrise with an incredible view from the summit of Mt. Ololokwe. After breakfast, we begin our descent.
The day is for leisure at the camp at the foot of Mt. Ololokwe. If you enjoy climbing, we can arrange this for you.
After breakfast, we drive to Nanyuki at the foot of Mt. Kenya. Weather permitting, you can see the snow-capped peak on the way to the Ole Pejeta Conservancy. With a population of 140 animals, Ol Pejeta is the largest black rhino sanctuary in East and Central Africa. We will arrive in time for lunch.
In the afternoon, you will go on a game drive to see what the Ole Pejeta Conservancy has to offer. With a bit of luck, you may see the Big Five – lions, elephants, buffalo, rhinos, and leopards – in the Ole Pejeta Conservancy.
This private reserve with its 360 km2 is located directly on the equator. You will also have the opportunity to visit a sanctuary for rescued chimpanzees from all over the world. Ol Pejeta is also home to the last two remaining northern white rhinos in the world.
Today we start the day with an early game drive at Ol Pejeta as the chances for spectacular game viewing are best in the early morning hours. The afternoon is at leisure, for example, to swim and relax at the hotel pool, congregating at the hotel’s waterhole, or for one of the extras offered by the reserve, such as a horseback ride.
After an early morning game drive we are on our way to Naivasha. We make a stopover at Thomson’s Falls, also called Nyahururu Falls, a stunning waterfall located close to the equator near Nyahururu.
We reach Lake Naivasha around lunchtime. In the afternoon, a guide will take you on a breathtaking boat safari. You are sure to encounter groups of hippos. In the late evening or early morning hours, when the hippos come to the shore, you can also take a guided walk to the lake shore.
South of Lake Naivasha, all hell breaks loose underground, and on the surface, canyon labyrinths and climbing cliffs beckon. Hell’s Gate National Park was established in 1984 and is named after a narrow cut in the cliffs that was once a tributary of a prehistoric lake.
The small national park is known for its wide variety of wildlife and spectacular scenery. The main attraction of the park is the Nyorowa Gorge.
The lower gorge can only be explored on foot. Weather permitting, a Maasai guide from the local Olerkarian community will lead us on an easy hike of several hours through the spectacular gorge to the hot springs called “Hell’s Kitchen”.
In the afternoon, we relax in the 35°C water at the Ol Karia geothermal hot spa.
Today we make a day trip to Nakuru. On our way, we pass Lake Elementaita to see flamingos. We reach Nakuru around lunchtime to explore the 2300 m high Menengai Crater, Nakuru’s local mountain, from where we have a fantastic view as far as Lake Bogoria and over the patchwork of small farms. A local guide takes us into the forests around the Menegai Crater and to caves with historical significance. Among other things, the rebels of the Mau Mau movement are said to have hidden here in the 1950s. The caves are considered sacred.
Today it is goodbye Kenya. We can decide on an early departure to Nairobi to visit some of the highlights of the Kenyan capital or take our time for a last hiking safari to Crater Lake Sanctuary and have lunch at the restaurant on the scenic lake.
