Your itinerary

Our representative will welcome you at Jomo Kenyatta Nairobi International Airport and introduce you to your guide and driver who will take you straight to your Hotel for the night. On the way, you will get the first impressions of the vibrant Kenyan capital. Your guide will be pleased to answer all questions about Kenyan culture, nature, and daily life that might come to your mind, now and in the following days you will be spending together.

We will start early in the morning for our road trip to Ngurunit, beautifully located at the foot of the Ndoto mountain range in the Samburu region.

On the way through the central region of Kenya, we are driving through a landscape mostly characterized by small-scale farming. There is much to discover on the way.

Be prepared with enough fresh water bottles as on our journey North we are entering the arid and hot part of Kenya. Once we are past Isiolo the heat will begin to take its toll on us.

Vibrant urban centers begin to give way to sparsely populated villages. Past Archers Post we will find ourselves mostly alone on one of the best roads in Kenya.

We drive towards Samburu, home to the ethnic group of the Samburu who might appear anytime in the arid landscape with their goats, cattle, and camels. Late in the evening, we arrive at Ngurunit.

Today we will relax and refresh after yesterday’s long drive with an optional day hike and/or a swim in the natural rock pools close to our hotel. We also have the opportunity to visit a Samburu village or just enjoy the scenic view of the Ndoto mountains.

We leave Ngurunit for Lake Turkana, traveling through the vastness of the rural Turkana region, the land of the ethnic group of the Turkana.

We reach our hotel on time for lunch, where we will have a traditional meal comprising of ugali, fried fish, fish fingers, chapati, and kachumbari. The afternoon is at leisure e.g. for a walk at the shore of Lake Turkana.

Today we will leave Lake Turkana behind and head for the desert region of Kalachi. On our way, we will visit the smallest ethnic group in Kenya, the El Molo, a small side branch of the Turkana, who live as fishermen and hunters at the lake at El Molo Bay.

As we continue on our way, we pass a series of oases where pastoralists bring their animals to water. When we reach the impressive dunes of northern Kenya, we know we are close to North Horr, a small settlement, supply, and mission station in “nowhere”. We will spend the night in Kalachi, worth visiting the small catholic church, showing the Old and New Testaments as murals in the Ethiopian style.

After breakfast, we depart for the town of Marsabit, in the dry season through the beautiful Chalbi Desert, which was once part of a large lake. The name of this arid area means “salty and bare” in the language of the local Gabbra people.

We reach Marsabit town at lunchtime. In the afternoon we might go for a short hike with a ranger or on a game drive in the dense forests of the crater lake of Marsabit National Park, the cool and lush environment being such a welcome contrast to the otherwise hot and dry town. The National Park is located on Mount Marsabit. There are three crater lakes in the park, which provide water supply for the whole area.

We will depart in the morning to Mt. Ololokwe, one of the most famous landmarks of Samburu County. The 2000m high table mountain is a popular destination for hiking and camping enthusiasts. We arrive in time for lunch.

Mt. Ololokwe is an important pillar of the Samburu cultural heritage and is also called the “holy mountain”. In the afternoon Samburu guides will lead us over 1000 meters of altitude on elephant trails to the top of the mountain (3-4h – easy hike) where dinner is already prepared for us. There we will camp for the night.

After breakfast, we start our descent to the foot of Mt. Ololokwe. We drive directly on to Sarara Camp in Samburu National Reserve, Namunyak Community Conservancy, where we will arrive on time for lunch. The camp is set on the slopes of the Mathew Mountains. It offers not only awe-inspiring views but also a swimming pool to relax in.

Through community conservation efforts over the years, Namunyak Community Conservancy has become a haven for wildlife – with elephants, giraffes, leopards, and many other species returning in increasing numbers. The conservancy is home to the second-largest population of elephants in Kenya, more than 450 reticulated giraffes, the critically endangered Grévy zebra, and a host of other species – including the fabled Gerenuk.

In the afternoon we can either decide on a game drive or a thrilling safari on horseback. We will end the day with sundowners under the wide open skies of Samburu County.

We have the whole day to explore Namunyak Community Conservancy. We might start the day with a guided walking safari with packed breakfasts in breathtaking settings or spend the morning beading with Samburu ladies and hear more about the cultural importance of their vivid jewelery before we honor an ancient Samburu tradition by visiting one of the famous Singing Wells or going on a game drive again.

After an early morning game drive and a scenic breakfast, we are on our way to Nairobi. We make a stop at a coffee farm in Nyeri County. Here we can see how and by whom Kenya’s black gold is produced.

Did you know that coffee is a cherry? The coffee farmers will take us on a very special tour of their beautiful coffee gardens. Not only will you learn all about the journey of coffee before it gets to your cup, we will also taste and enjoy it! We will arrive in Nairobi in the early evening, in time for a farewell dinner before it is time to say goodbye to Kenya.
